Karnataka Detects the HMPV Virus

Two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections have been confirmed in Karnataka by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). As part of ICMR’s continuous efforts to track respiratory diseases nationwide, both cases were found through routine surveillance for several respiratory virus pathogens. According to reports, the sick persons are an eight-month-old boy and a three-month-old girl. Neither patient has ever traveled abroad before.

A common respiratory virus called HMPV can cause symptoms similar to a cold, including fever, coughing, and runny nose. It can occasionally result in more severe conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. Although adults can contract HMPV, children are the most prevalent carriers.

Although there isn’t a vaccination for HMPV, there are steps you may do to stop the virus from spreading:

  • Use soap and water to wash your hands frequently.
  • Refrain physical contact with sick persons.
  • If you’re sick, stay at home.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Put used tissues in the garbage.
  • Surfaces that are often touched, including worktops and doorknobs, should be cleaned and disinfected.

Consult your physician if you suspect HMPV. Although HMPV has no known cure, your doctor can help you manage your symptoms.
